Oil on panel Near Reigate by Henry Maidment, signed and dated '95.
s051r170     £3300.00

Henry Maidment was a painter of landscape, figurative, animal and genre subjects who painted during the late 19th Century. His works often show country life in their natural environment. He, along with many of his peers, prospered during the late 19th C, winning many patrons from the emerging middle class. With the advent of Industrial Age a new, wealthy social class prospered and eagerly demanded the acquisition of art in order to show off their cultural appreciation. The majority of these patrons lived in the industrial towns of England, which were often smoky and dirty places in which to dwell. As a reaction, there evolved a great demand for landscapes. Canvases such as "Near Reigate, Surrey" provided an escape into a clean and idealised countryside. Maidment exhibited at many galleries and works by the artist have now become popular with both the private and public collectors. Dims 81/2 x 12 inches.
